Eid celebrations pass peacefully

ONE person was arrested for a public order offence following otherwise peaceful Eid celebrations in Southall over the weekend.

Celebrations took place to observe the Muslim holiday, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Inspector Rob Bryan, head of the local policing unit, said Eid was celebrated peacefully in Southall on Sunday night as police instigated a traffic exclusion zone.

He said: "This measure was used with the full support of Southall residents after trouble flared at the recent Twenty20 cricket celebrations.

"All non-local traffic was stopped from entering Southall between 6pm and 9.45pm, allowing pedestrians to enjoy celebrations.

"Recent disorder in Southall has meant we decided to implement a TEZ on Eid. Southall draws a lot of traffic during big events, much of which simply drives up and down the Broadway sounding their horns, playing load music and causing traffic chaos.

"When the exclusion was put in, the Broadway was a really enjoyable place to be. the community were very much for this measure and we have received positive feedback about it.

"There was a degree of noise when the exclusion zone was taken out, and congestion around Southall also increased.

"But there was no crowd disorder and the operation was a success with only one arrest made for a public order offence. "
