The were both sentenced to six months suspended for two years, ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work each and pay £100 costs each.

Prosecutor Douglas Adams displayed a recording of the street CCTV, which showed the three men grappling between parked cars until the Somali man had his clothes torn off and was pushed to the ground and kicked.

Mr Adam said: "This happened at six o'clock in the morning and the complainant never made a statement to the police."

"He was unco-operative and unfriendly to police when they tried to deal with him in the ambulance.

"But the officer who spoke to him noted that both eyes were swollen, he had a cut to his face and cuts and grazes to his knees and lower parts of his arms, and he had no clothing on".

Peter Walsh, defending both men, said there was no excuse for their behaviour but there was some explanation.

They had "both been drinking excessively during the whole of the previous night and the initial contact was from the Somali victim. He engaged in some kind of racist slur and that upset them," said Mr Walsh.

Mr Walsh added both men "were so ashamed of their behaviour when they viewed it, that they had since given up drinking any alcohol at all".

Sentencing them, Judge Andrew McDowall said: "Both of you know, and have been reminded, that your behaviour was shameful.

"It should not have happened. It is a matter of chance whether serious injury is caused and kicking to the head carries a much higher risk. It would have been easy to justify a custodial sentence".
