Railway Society Can Stay - For Now
It's good news for a railway preservation group after it has been given a new lease of life following months of uncertainty.
The Great Western Railway Preservation Group in Southall, which maintains and repairs vintage steam engines, had been given weeks to vacate its site by Network Rail back in August.
But now, following talks, the rail operator has given the group permission to occupy a different part ofthe same site off Green Drive, and it has a larger space than before.
Bob Gorringe, chairman of the society said: "We would have had to vacate the site and take our collection with us, which obviously would have been impossible. But this annoucement is very good news and we welcome it."
A spokesman for Nerwork Rail said: "The GWR Preservation Group has been provided with a two-year contracted-out tenancy. "
"When this expires they will still be expected to vacate this site. However, we may consider the sale of this site to the Group, should they make an offer at market value."
