New Lidl Opens

There was a big queue outside the new Lidl Supermarket in Southall this morning (September 18), as crowds snapped up bargain goods in the midst of the credit crunch.

Trollers were piled high with items as shoppers decided to stock up while the UK enters a period of financial uncertainty.

But there were reports - denied by Lidl - that there had been some sort of scuffle at the store in Uxbridge Road, which opened its doors at 8am.

Radio station LBC ran a story at around 10am yesterday that there had been a fight at the store.

One eyewitness called in to the show and said: "There were people all trying to get to the cheap goods. Flowers got knocked over and my hands got stamped on."

But Lidl spokesman Marco Ivone said there was no trouble at the store, which had a very busy opening. He could not confirm how many people were waiting at 8am when it opened.

He said: "It was a very, very busy store opening. At around 10.30 am we had around 50 people queueing up, waiting to get in.

"I think people realise what we offer and how cheap our goods are."

Three low-cost items in particular proved popular; a 19" widescreen LCD monitor, a CD/MP3 car radio and a sewing machine.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan police said they did not receive any calls about a disturbance at the store.
