Multi-million pound bid to give club its first stadium
An ambitious multi-million pound scheme is being hatched by Southall Football Club for a sports arena to be built.
Bulwant Gill, vice-chairman of the club, said the initiative is in its early stages but the club's committee is aiming for an 8,000 capacity sporting facility, costing in the region of £13 million.
Southall Football Club, founded in 1871, does not have its own ground. Mr Gill said he would like to see the arena, tentatively earmarked for the site of the former Western International Supermarket in Hayes, up and running in time for the London Olympics in 2012.
He said: "This is something which would benefit the entire community, not just in Southall but in the surrounding areas.
"It would get more people into sport and would also be a means of helping to steer young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour."
Mr Gill said he has not approached Ealing Council for help with funding but the club is in talks with a number of major banks and has enlisted the support of MPs Virendra Sharma and Steve Pound.
