Gurdwara Election Protest

Posted by Shujaul Azam on Sep 15, 08 11:59 AM in People

A PROTEST outside the Charity Commission in London has been rescheduled by the opposition in the run-up to the forthcoming Gurdwara elections.

Opposition members had planned to protest tomorrow at what they claim is unfair treatment by President Simmat Singh Sohi.

The protest has been tentatively moved from today (Tuesday) to Monday September 22 as the opposition has given the Charity Commission until Thursday to respond to new paperwork.

Spokesman Gurminder Singh Thind said that if the commission does not respond, or if its response is unsatisfactory, the protest will go ahead.

The elections will be held on October 5 to decide the executive committee from 2008 - 2010, but the oppposition is alleging President Himmat Singh Sohi is obstructing free and fair balloting.

Tory councillor Gurharan Singh accused Mr Sohi of witholding access to a membership list and demanding nominations forms be sent to a scrutiny committee with allegiance to him.

Mr Sohi denied any wrongdoing, saying he is following correct procedure and preventing any abuse of the membership list, which he does not have access to.

Protestors are demanding access to the complete membership list, equal representation in the scrutiny committee and election supervisory panel, and fair practice inside polling booths.

We'd like to hear from you.
