Day Centre Celebrations

More than 350 people turned up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Southall Day Centre last week.

The centre in Shackleton Road was bustling with activity last Wednesday (September 24) as staff, visitors and families celebrated throughout the day.

TWO builders from Southall await a jury's verdict after being accused of raping a prostitute in Swindon.

Arvinder and Karnail Singh are said to have dragged the heroin addict upstairs at a house they were working on before forcing her to have sex with them.

A wealthy businessman denied killing his wife more than nine years after she vanished without trace.

Martin Hale, 51, is accused of murdering his wife Maureen, who was last seen alive on June 22, 1999.

Court Appeal Fails

Two men jailed after taking the law into their own hands following a burglary have failed in an Appeal Court bid to clear their names of false imprisonment convictions.

Karin Shawkat Mohammed, 49, and Andeel Hammad, 55, were convicted by a Blackfriars Crown Court jury in April 2007 of holding Polish national Krzysztof Sobiechowski against his will at Hammad's West London home.

New Eco-School For Southall

More than £7 million will be spent on a state-of-the-art new sixth form centre at Featherstone High School in Southall.

Building work has begun on the site in Montague Waye, which will be heated using the latest energy-saving technology and constructed with cutting-edge environmentally friendly materials.

Day Centre Anniversary

AN AFTERNOON of singing, dancing and food is being planned to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Southall Day Centre on Wednesday (September 24) from 2pm onwards.

Hundreds of local residents who use the centre will join with staff and local dignitaries, including Leader of Ealing Council, Cllr Jason Stacey, to mark the occasion.

Hospital Parking Criticised

Labour councillors in Southall have blasted parking charges at Ealing Hospital, calling them a stealth tax on the sick and their relatives.

In an open letter to Ealing Hospitals NHS Trust from 10 ward councillors, it reads: "The minimum fee of £3.50 is wholly unjustifiable.

Steam Engine Society Under Threat

A STEAM engine society in Southall is facing an uphill struggle for survival as it fights to save its valuable collection.

The GWR Preservation Group, which maintains and runs vintage steam engines at Southall Railway Centre near Green Drive, has been given its second notice to quit in less than four years.

New Lidl Opens

There was a big queue outside the new Lidl Supermarket in Southall this morning (September 18), as crowds snapped up bargain goods in the midst of the credit crunch.

Trollers were piled high with items as shoppers decided to stock up while the UK enters a period of financial uncertainty.

New Health Centre Opens

A new health centre for Southall was opened this morning by MP Virendra Sharma.

Mr Sharma cut the red ribbon at Southall Broadway Health Centre before going on a tour of the facility and speaking to patients and staff. More details soon.
